Everything You Need to Know About Latitude 64 Project ChainGrip

Latitude 64 is pushing the boundaries of putter plastic with Project ChainGrip, their most experimental material to date. It is currently being thrown in the real world from an earlier prototype release in the Pure mold. The next release is August 13th at 8am CT in prototype form on the new Peak mold and the Pure mold, making this disc part of an active real-world testing program — meaning the discs you can buy soon (or right now) are genuine prototypes, and your feedback is part of the process.

A Plastic Built Around One Obsession: Chain Grip

The concept behind Project ChainGrip is straightforward: what if the outer rim of a putter was specifically engineered to grab chains on impact rather than glance off? That single question drove the development of this plastic. Latitude 64 describes it as the grippiest material they have ever put on a disc.

The focus throughout development was on maximizing tactile feedback and chain-grabbing performance without sacrificing the clean, predictable release that players depend on. Stiffness and grip do not always play well together, and the team had real concerns going in — would the grip be so aggressive that discs start releasing late, stuck to the hand a fraction too long? Early testing has answered that question encouragingly, with players responding positively to both the feel and the clean release.


Project ChainGrip Plastic: How It Works

ChainGrip is not a single material — it is a dual-plastic fusion using the same patent-pending technique behind Latitude 64's earlier Project Grip. Two distinct materials are placed with purpose across the disc, each doing a specific job.

 

1. Zero Hard Core & Inner Rim

The structural foundation of both ChainGrip discs is Latitude 64's familiar Zero Hard plastic. Zero Hard is a stiff, reliable blend that players already know from other putters in the lineup — it provides a consistent feel in the hand and a durable base that holds its shape over time. Using it for the core and inner rim means the disc's fundamental flight characteristics and structural integrity are grounded in a proven material.

2. ChainGrip Outer Rim

The outer rim is where the experiment lives. Latitude 64 describes this material as the grippiest plastic they have ever put on a disc. The intent is to increase chain-grabbing on impact — particularly on putts that hit at an angle — while still allowing a clean release from the hand. Early testing has been encouraging on both fronts, but Latitude 64 is clear that this is still a prototype and data collection is ongoing. If you buy one, you are part of that process.


The August 13th Drop: Peak & Pure

The next wave of ChainGrip prototypes drops on Thursday, August 13th at 8:00 AM CT in two molds. Here is what to know about each one before you decide.

ChainGrip Peak

This is a new beadless version of the Peak, a stable putter built for players who want a disc that handles both putting and approach duties. Though in ChainGrip, its specialty will be putting. With flight numbers of 3 | 3 | 0 | 1, it flies straight, resists torque, and finishes with a soft, predictable fade. The beadless profile makes for a clean release, and the Zero Hard core gives it the stiff, familiar feel of a disc you can trust on a windy approach line as much as inside the circle. ChainGrip Pure

The Pure is Latitude 64's legendary straight-flying putter mold, and it is the disc at the center of the 10,000-putt data collection project. Co-developed with input from Kristin Lätt and Jesper Lundmark, the ChainGrip Pure is built for players who want a neutral, laser-straight flight with maximum confidence on the green. The Science Behind the Project

Latitude 64 is not just releasing a new plastic and calling it grippy — they are trying to measure whether it actually performs better. Project ChainGrip is assembling a dedicated test team with a specific mission: record data from 10,000 putts with ChainGrip Pure putters, compared against 10,000 putts with a regular plastic Pure. It is a rigorous, statistical approach to answering a question that matters to every disc golfer: does a grippier rim actually reduce kick-outs and improve the make percentage?

The honest answer right now is that they do not know yet. Early testing has been encouraging with how nice it releases even with an extra grippy rim, but data has not been released to show if there are any real differences in sticking to the chains. That transparency is worth noting — this is a genuine experiment, not a finished product with a marketing story built around it.


Our Take: Promising, With One Real Question

Having handled the ChainGrip plastic firsthand, the rim is genuinely tacky in a way that immediately builds confidence. The disc feels great, and the grip on the rim is not subtle — you notice it right away. That tactile quality is exactly what Latitude 64 is going for, and on that front they have clearly delivered something different. 

That said, the tackiness raises a question we have not seen fully answered yet: how does it hold up to dirt? Sticky plastic grabs chains, but it also grabs whatever is on the ground. We had a similar experience with Kastaplast's K4 plastic — it feels very grippy out of the box, but throw it in loose dirt a few times and that grippy surface starts holding onto debris rather than releasing it, which can quickly turn a tacky rim into a slick one.

Whether that becomes an issue with ChainGrip remains to be seen. The saving grace here may be how these discs are actually used — a dedicated putter that rarely leaves your hand for full-power field work will potentially see less ground contact than a fairway driver or midrange. If you are using the ChainGrip Peak or Pure strictly inside the circle, dirt accumulation may not be much of an issue. A quick wipe between holes would likely handle it regardless. But it is worth keeping in mind, and something we will be paying attention to as more real-world rounds get logged with these prototypes.

Project ChainGrip is one of the more genuinely interesting things happening in disc golf right now.
